Its definitly true! Chickens are not too picky! I found through this site and others that I can really make my odds and ends work without spending $$$ on things for my birds. Some ideas to inspire others. I used a cat carrier as a nest box! Just removed the door. I was skeptical at first, but there this morning my RIR gals decided to start laying! HURRAH! We have two pullets that started today. We've been on egg watch for over 3 weeks. My other nest boxes are made out of my very much unused recylce bins. Well they were recycled now of course ! For Chickens! They don't have a top to them and the birds just leap to the edge and then hop in. Yup that works too. I also turned a plastic "scoop away" cat litter bin into a feeder. Cleaned it out, removed the bottom, made a couple of large slots in the sides and fixed it into a 13X9 baking pan I don't use anymore. Voila feeder! I was getting tired of all the waste and scooping feed each day only to see it end up on the floor. Hmmm might have to scrounge at some garge sales for more odds and ends. Just think what You can do! LOL

SunChick, congrats on the accomplishments without spending any hard earned dollars.

Building and living green is great for the enviornment, plus the wallet stays fat!

Absolutely! I was using a rabbit hutch as a coop until Tom was killed by a raccoon. Penny uses my Aunt's cat carrier for a nest box and a place to get away from Obelisk. Slifer and Obelisk had an air conditioner box as a nest box and to be put into when it got extremely cold. I use towels on the chairs for covers when they ploop.

I'd like to see a picture of your Scoop Away/ baking dish feeder. Lots of food gets wasted on the floor. Thanks.
