Wow - I LOVE this site - You guys are Great! - I've been trying to do research on Ameraucanas and I've learned more from just this one message board than all my internet searching!
New to chickens - got a mutt package last season from the local feed store - and got one chicken that I'm absolutely enthralled with and "in love" with - It took me time to figure out just what she was - but not for long since she soon started laying blue/green eggs!
Have thoroughly enjoyed the controversy in my researching her origins - Ameraucana vs. easter egg mutt vs. Araucana.
Would like to cross an Ameraucana with a dark laying variety - ie. Ameraucana hen w/ Maran Rooster. Would the Rooster pass on the dark coating ability to his pullet offspring? And at what point would dark coating be so dark as to completely cover any sign of blue egg. Ie. should I go with ligher brown egg breeds if Iwant to produce a really dark olive green looking egg?
Just thought it'd be fun to try - Anyone have any luck w/ outcrossing coming up with different colored eggs?
