Hey all,
My ameraucana is losing neck and beard feathers. On further inspection today, I noticed little grayish bugs crawling around on her bald spots. Are they mites? What can I do for her, and how can I prevent my other hens from getting mites?
Thanks for any help!

Can you see tiny bugs crawling elsewhere on feathered areas? I would inspect the others. If you see mites or lice, permethrin dust or spray is a good treatment. Of course nests, roosts, and coop must be treated as well once bedding is removed, before it is replaced. Lice require treatment every 10 days, while mites require treatment every 7 days at least 2 times. That is to get the lice or mite eggs once they hatch. Here is a good link to red to make sure that it is mites:

It looks like feathers may be broken off, which could be from pecking.

Thanks! On reading that article, I've decided that they are lice, not mites. I saw some nits near the vent feathers of another bird, according to the article that is a lice thing. I'll be treating for that.
Oof. Guess I should watch out for feather peckers too 😭 thanks again guys.
