In our Co. (warren-Ohio) A lot of kids go home with blue ribbons. may have a real bad "hatchery" chicken but, its the best in it's category. For instance, you night have 7 silkie pullets, all from a hatchery, the judge will pick the best of that group. Then the same with the cocks, hens, and cockerels. THEN he will pick the best of the whole group. After he has judged all the chickens in the show, he will pick the TOP birds for champion. In our CO. this is NOT going to be a hatchery bird. I tell my 4-H ers to go to a show, or find a breeder. Do homework, it cost the same to raise a $5.00 bird as it does to raise a $1.50 bird. If the kids talk to breeders most will help the kid out with a decent quality show bird to get started with. Start with your bird you bought and work up and learn from it. Our favorite bird is a Rhode Island Turkin x the kids show him at fair just because he BEAUTIFUL and people admire his (only a mother could love)lol looks.
good luck, and have fun
