Hey everyone! Ok so we are well into our chicken-keeping journey lol and these two girls šŸ¤žšŸ»are some of our faves!! We purchased them in Feb. from Orschlens and they were approx 1 week old when we got them. They were labeled as Ameraucana (spelled correctly fwiw) and I understand that most feed stores get them and they end up being EE, but I’ve dug for weeks online and compared more pics than I care to admit šŸ˜‚ and am hoping that maybe we lucked into two true Ameraucanas. Even if we didn’t, that’s ok because they’re beautiful šŸ˜ and will lay pretty eggs anyway. 🄰

The reason for my post is: 1) to determine if they’re indeed pullets as well as: 2) curiosity as to whether they’re true Ameraucanas or not. 😜 Or at least give me your best educated guesses. šŸ¤“ From comparing them to the breed standard, they closely resemble a Brown Red (Cocoa) and a Blue (Sugar). Curiosity just has the best of me at this point. šŸ™ˆšŸ˜‚

I’m including their ā€œbabyā€ pics from 1 week, 4.5 weeks, and current, at 10 weeks. Their age is a close approximation based on when Orschlens got them and back dating to determine their hatch date. They had them the week of Valentines Day (saw their sign that Friday) and we bought them that following Monday (the 17th). I guessed they hatched on Feb 10th and they received them the 12th. They did tell me they received them kinda early lol.

We have more pics of their fellow flock mates we bought that day as well which include 3 BA, 2 BR, and 1 RIR but I’ll post those at another time in a different post to get y’all’s opinions on their gender as well. ā˜ŗļø

Ok so without further ado, meet Cocoa and Sugar!! (We love to bake...and our 14yo daughter makes the BEST brownies so, yeah šŸ˜‚ we got creative lol! 🤪)

Can’t wait to see what y’all think! Thanks in advance!! 🄰

They are both pullets IMO. Hold Cocoa’s saddle feathers in your hand and I bet you’ll see they are round.
As far as true Ameraucanas, they look like they are mixed with something else. Maybe barred rock in Cocoa and RIR in Sugar. Maybe they are mixed between Red/Brown Ameraucanas. I don’t know enough about genetics to know though, I’m just guessing. Even if they are mixed they are very pretty birds! Here’s a link to the Ameraucanas Breeders Club if you have not already found it.

Ok so I’m out here with them now and snapped a few close up pics of Cocoa’s hackle feathers. Hers have always looked pointy but when you look at them closely, they’re actually rounded, it’s just the coloring makes them appear pointed. If that makes sense? 🤪 Anyway, here’s some pics of her hackle and saddle feathers. Let me know if this helps ā€œseal the dealā€ on pullet status! šŸ˜
