American Game Bantams??

Hello All

Im very new to chickens as well as this forum but really enjoying the entire experience so far ! :)

Heres a few pictures of my ( I think ) AGF He's approx 12 weeks.
Well Im told he's a he !!

so here's Popcorn ! :)

It's a cockerel but I don't think it's an American Game Bantam. Leg colour looks wrong & I'm not sure what's up with that comb.

Just found this thread, and I am pretty sure my boy is an AGF banty....I picked him up at a horse stables in the "hood" when he was 2 weeks old, have no idea who mama & papa were.
What do you guys think? I LOVE him and he is 3yrs old now and a great boy!

MY PHAROW:

p.s. I had him dubbed as his pea comb was touching his eye... and yes he only had one leg..lost the right leg below the hock in a freak accident...

Pea combed & partially crested=he's not an American Game Bantam. He's not any particular breed.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that he's "no particular breed." I believe it is a large fowl American Game, or at least mostly. There are tasseled versions versions of American Games known as "Toppies". Might have picked up the pea comb from having some Oriental game fowl bred in.

But, no, definitely not an American Game Bantam as accepted by the ABA or APA - he looks to be more of a large fowl, for one thing.

NOW ya'all got me curious....could some one be so so kind as to post a SOP american game bantam? My Pharow is a mid size guy, approx 2-3pounds. Where I live outside of LA there are alot of hispanics that breed AGFs and the kids breed kikirikis [which are tiny versions of AGFs] . These birds are a mix of OEGB and what ever else strikes their fancy OR they can get their hands on [ie: serama / houdan / seabright / rosecomb to name a few] The kids wnat their birds to have "fight" in them (just like Papa's birds) And of course there are MANY birds that they do not want and they just leave them out on their property to fend for them selves, so they start fence hopping and breeding with everything......I know my guy is one of these mixes but when I see pictures of AGF and OEGB I see where he has alot of their attributes. Where I picked him up was at a place where there were alot of these cast-off birds......
Anyhow I am babbling.................. :duc :)

Well, that's often a problem with photos is that, unless there is something in the photo to indicate scale, it's diffucult to guess size.

Point average in the Standards for an AGB cock is 30 ounces, which means the can come in at no more than 36 ounces (standards allow for 20% +/-). So, 2 pounds is OK, 3 is probably a DQ on size.

Basically, the standard calls for slate legs on BBR AGBs, a semi-cardiod (half-heart shaped) tail set at a 50 degree angle from horizontal, with a strait comb dubbed in males in the same manner as a OEGB (that is, not a full dub to the skull as you would with a Modern Game or LF American Game).

I would say that your assessment of him as a Large American Game (or at least some sort of mostly AG with 1/8 or less Oriental game pit cross) bred to an OEGB is probably as reasonable explanation as any. I agree that his body type definitely indicates a signficant amount of Western game blood in there.

Nice of you to give him a home.

WOW :bow THANK U for the wonderful explanation! He is the absolute favorite of my birds and will stay with me as long as he lives! He also has the niftiest melodic crow. :)

You're welcome.

I had a bit of an oversized AGB who's crow sounded like the first four notes to the Raiders of the Lost Ark theme. Needless to say, his name was "Indy".

Unfortunately, I let him and his ladies out to free range this last summer and he opted to find his own place to roost. I went out at dusk to put them away. I found his hens, but he decided to hide beteen a fold in the chicken wire and a tarp I'd put up on my Kentucky Speck coop for shade and a oppossum sniffed him out. I've really come to not like those critters.
