I’m not really confident enough to shoot any further than 25 yds with it just yet.

25 yds tops with snow on the ground and plenty cold.
I’ve shot squirrels with muzzy small game heads at 23 and 24 yds but ideally at 20 yds or less.
I’ve never been elk or moose hunting but I’ve had moose within 10 yds of me. I’m sure the guy could shoot further than 10yds accurately if he wanted to.The guy that made my long bow had several Arizona elk under his belt, and set his effective range at 10 yards!
He had some crazy stories about sitting trails on the mountain side with the wind in his favor, elk nearly stepping on him...
he used to always ask me if I’d given up my “training wheels” yet, lol
I think if I ever hunt with it, 20 would be tough for me.... but I’d have to shoot a lot more to know...

I’d rather have everything close though anyway. That’s what makes it fun. Anything else is just killing.

Yeah with the heavy arrow weight and cut on contact heads they sail right through them. The arrows ar so much slower though so from any distance he has to hold much higher than dead on. Makes perfect sense. He could for certain... I asked him why only ten and he went into an interesting bit of theory... I don’t recall all of it, but it was about reducing the arc of the arrow ...
...his goal was to have the critter drop in sight... he said most of his deer and some of the elk would take a hop look around and then go back to feeding or whatever ... then tip over
... his idea was that the lower arrow speed with a straighter path didn’t thump them, just a clean slice that didn’t spook them and make them run...
... I dunno... I’m on the other end of things these days, with the rubber bands and space age craziness ...they all take off hauling the mail![]()
I barely like the training wheels.

They’re looking for penetration more than speed. It makes perfect sense. In a world hung up on speed some guys have went the other way. I’ll take penetration over speed any day.Yeah I think a heavy arrow was the other part of I was trying to remember... he was a cool guy ... made his own bows with a homemade steam box
