The whole “hunt club” deal is another thing I’ve always wondered about. I don’t want to hunt deer and then go sit around with a bunch of fat old men having a circle jerk. That’s not my idea of a good time.

I hear ya... I don’t really know anything about those... but I’m just preprogrammed to want to get away from people, so that’d be a nonstarter for me

In Northern Missouri and Iowa I know this is tradition, and it’s because the farmers would be harvesting during hunting season, so they would get the whole family together and do a drive and fill the freezer in one day, because time is short then...

Iowa allows “party hunting” too where anyone in the group can fill any of the tags...

Not my thing but I do understand the tradition of it for farming families at least...

Yeah these guys are putting on drives through state forest land and walking through the woods.
It’s been a long time since that tradition was relevant around here.

I don't even like anyone near me when I'm using the dang meat slicer.
I tell everyone shut their hole and don't come near me. :gig

J give me a lecture for not putting orange on out setting those traps the other day. Guess he's got a point huh.

My dad was a butcher and I learned that trade and did it for a few years when I was younger ...

I would have people want to talk to me while I was on the saw, so I’d use Dad’s trick and sling a little blood their way with “oops, sorry” and they’d clear on out in a hurry, lol

Yeah I like to do things on my own or with one other person. I don’t need a gaggle of people with me. I don’t have the tolerance to listen to the kinda stories that would flow so easily from the mouths of those kinda idiots anyway.

Even in IA and MO it’s often as not, a bunch of slobs that can’t sit still and just want to shoot something and then go drink beer... but as far as changing the regs here, I try to keep the farming families in mind...

Hound hunting was another issue that was tradition, in Louisiana and places with large swampy tracts I think it still makes some sense... in southern MO where it was once traditional, it no longer fits...

My buddy’s dad told me a crazy story about road blocks and ass whoppins from when he was a young man because someone picked up their three legged beagle that was their deer hound... being one wheel short made him run deer slower so he was prized, lol

Him and his brothers were apparently a pretty rough bunch ... different times I guess

Lol. Yeah the problem with hound hunting is just the open tracts of land needed are few and far between anymore. I have had my wars with a few guys running foxes.

Coyote hunting dogs are big nuisance to people around here. The law won't do anything about the people who let their dogs run the coyotes. . even if they are bothering your livestock.
I do want to train Mason to track things. . but I am also hoping by making him a companion I will be able to condition him to come back to me when I need him to. :fl

Dirty go to hell looks usually work for me. It's not hard to tell when I'm ticked.. Even when I try to hide it. :lau
I used to work with a gal that would call in any time she was scheduled to work with me.

Do you plan to break your pup from running deer or anything?

He’s probably going to be very cold nosed, so he’ll work a lot of close tracks vs. streaking off looking for something hot...

But I’m always of the mind that it’s best to train a purpose built dog to NOT do what they are bred to do if you don’t want them to do that, or redirect that instinct and energy into play or something more acceptable...

Shepherds as frisbee dogs is a good example of redirecting, but shepherds specifically trained NOT to chase livestock is example of making sure their instinct doesn’t cause problems...

The number of problematic border collies and Australian shepherds and healers I’ve seen is a big number because folks just seem to hope their pup won’t want to do what their entire lineage was bred to do

For your hound I’d consider breaking him off deer for sure, unless you just like taking long rides around the country side singing “Heeere Mason...” lol

but also maybe encouraging him to tree squirrels or something like that ... although if he trees up hard I’m not sure I would want that either ... might get a bit tedious listening to that
