So you just keep the best stags from all the chicks and make new pens for them?
Also do the pullets and hens free range year round or do you have a few coops that you keep them in?
Nope I’m not building anymore pens. I’ll cull birds and replace them with better birds. Theoretically they get better from year to year of breeding. I’ll let all the pullets run loose unless I want to absolutely keep a certain bird then I’ll pen her. I don’t usually keep multiple hens together unless they were kept that way from young. I’ve only got 2 pens with more than 1 hen. They’ve been like that since chicks. I cannot just add a hen into another pen that already has a hen in there, they’ll fight.

We all like a nice Good rooster, but give me a hen that throws them and I'm much happier don't get me wrong you need both, I watch the pullets/hens probably more than the stags especially once penned. All of the pullets like havoc said I'll let range until I feel confident in making a choice a hen can take a bit longer before choosing or culling in my opinion. It's all a crapshoot but theirs signs to help you along the way, gut feelings, and paying close attention helps. You could have the baddest individual sob an the best hen and not produce anything close or if you do it's few an far between being more consistent and not going backwards with offspring is something to strive for.

So true! Finding the good hens takes time. It seems like I only find 1 or 2 a year that will produce really nice stags, no matter what she is mated with.
