View attachment 4321901An adopted laying “hen” grew massive spurs that require intervention… really wondering why it doesn’t crow? I mean dang that looks rooster, but no rooster behaviours at all. Anyway trimmed it after months of letting it settle in get used to us, the flock and building trust in being handled. I am thinking it’s a rooster… might need a new name.

She's 100% a hen. Females both young, & old can grow spurs. It's not completely uncommon, or unusual actually.View attachment 4321902Not a game bird, but boy has this bird surprised me with how these have grown. Red bird in background between the blue & barred.

I know hens can get them & I would consider it good if she was certain breeds even. Just surprised and doubting myself (lol) on this production RIR. My long tailed line hen is hiding aka nesting someplace on the property, sneaky girl. She's 100% a hen. Females both young, & old can grow spurs. It's not completely uncommon, or unusual actually.
Yeah for her breed it is. If she was a game hen or a long tailed breed whose breeder knows breeding hens with spurs is good for maintaining the long tailed breed genes in the roosters it would not surprise me as much. Just doubting myself, as usually I spot rooster way early. Dog nail clippers were too small for her spurs. Ended up with using Garden Shears, the battery dog nail dermal barely worked because of its safety guider. Next trimming will require full power tools I think…Is it just the spurs throwing you off? I have hens with double spurs.
Lol I hear you. I think they are not too uncommon in Mediterranean breads as well. Leghorn etcYeah for her breed it is.
