Hi Stern Rose.
I believe very firmly "Where there is a will there is a way."
My first sled I personally made was for hauling wood to the house from the wood pile. It was built from scrap lumber 2X4's. it was more or less a kind of a L-shaped lladder with one end of the long pieces cut at an angle to "rise" it out of the snow. The foolowing spring and summer I got a cpl of dogs so I drilled holes large enough to put lawnmowerer wheels on the "runners". They were only about 1&1/2 inches below the runners but it worked as a training cart. I wore the soles off 3 prs of shoes because I didn't have any other brakes but it worked. That winter I had 6 dogs trained to pull a sleigh I made from old toboggans I snagged from the landfill site. My gangline was made from pieces of rope that I bought from Home Hardware simply because it was easier than using leather the way my grandfather did. It wasn't the professional type I make now but it worked.
Lots and lots of trial and error, lots of money spent on "stuff" that was "substandard equipment" but a real learning experience so the money wasn't wasted.
You know what seems weird to me? When I was searching the web for ideas I couldn't find any of the stuff I started making. Now it's all over the web.
Pretty well the same sites I go on now too. Mind you, 30 years ago things were way different. Most of our computers were used only for data storage. 1.7 Gegs was a huge memory then. And it cost me &1700.00. LOL. What a huge difference now eh.
Anyway, there are lots of sites to look at now. I don't know how geographically close you are to any of them but .......
Here is an address you can look at if you wish, www.blackicedogsledding.com/
Oh yeah, Shiba Inu is a bit small aren't they? Their name means Litle Fox so apparently they would be littler than a fox. I think they were originally bred to hunt.
Actually I have 3 Sibes that didn't get very big and they are strong like the dickens.. I use them for wheel and swing.
Dog Breed Info Center probably has info on Shiba Inu. It has prettywell all dogs on there I think.
Good luck

i should post a pick of my sled tomorrow. my dad and i made it

(go dad!) to stand up to 4-6 dogs. Like i said, I'm a beginner musher who doesn't have alot of $$$ to spend on what i can (attempt to) build myself. Most of my stuff is not up to racing standards...at all.

My friend uses one for carting with her dogs.

cool!
I'm both ADD and ADHA. I learn by doing. (yep stole that from 4h lol) The more i can actively do something, and the less i have to read about it, the better i am at that thing. I love to read but don't learn well with reading.

Wow. That's so ironic.
Come to think pf it, A LOT of the younger guys and gals(50-60-70 yrs old up to the youngsters) that I've met do seem a bit high strung. However , the old ones where mushing was an integral part of their lifestyle( which was pretty common even up to 40 years ago) were more laid back.
Does this mean that most of us newer rec mushers are ADD or ADHD or some other label that society seems to need to affix before they are comfortable with whomever or whatever.
But yeah, I can relate to learning as I do. Yup, and I also like reading. Just don't have time anymore because there is so much to do around home.
Also because of this computer and the www. LOL

I don't know if ADD or ADHD have to do with newbie rec mushers, but i know I'm all three lol!
I like reading, but oddly enough, I am terrible at spelling and grammar!
any way, SternRose, i will post some pics of the sled i built! (trust me, it will make you feel better about what ever you buy/build lol)

Ok, lol. My dad was already gunna build me a sled so, if you have the LAN or instructions, he'd love it!
Wow come to thing of it.
1) my dad was gunna build me a sled BEFORE I said I wanted to start my own team!!
I think secretly, there all in for me getting my own team.
I think there just worried that if they say ok to this, I'll drop being a vet!
Never in a million years would I even think of another career without being a vet 1st!
Life long dream started at 5-7yrs old and still is alive today!

When I was in grade 5 or 6(can't remember it was so long ago) I wanted to be a vet. The Guidance Counsellor talked me out of it stating there was already a vet in a town 40 miles and I should endeavour to be a carpenter. Hmph!! A few years later another Gidance Counsellor talked me out of being a doctor. Said I should be an electrician.Dbl hmph!! In grade 9 another one talked me out of being a lawyer. Told me to take up plumbling because "water works is coming to our community. This time HMPH!!!!
I found out after I had been out of school for quite a few years that any Guidance Counsellor that was sent to our community was instructed to not let us aspire.
But I can build a house, wire it and put in the plumbing....., septic tank, leech field and all.

If you wana be a vet, that is a fine honourable career.
Please be aware though that a great deal of the problems that afflict our pets are our own doing. Please check out. rawfeed.com/myths/changed.html
Read the whole thing. It'll knock your socks off. I took the liberty to copy and paste a small portion to pique your interest. Keep in mind, there is a LOT of information on that site and it will take a long time to read it all much less absorb it all.
The only reason it was easy for me is because I already knew a great deal of it. I just lacked the professional wording to stymy those that would oppose me with their propaganda.

So here is that quote.......
"Dogs do not normally produce the necessary enzymes in their saliva (amylase, for example) to start the break-down of carbohydrates and starches; amylase in saliva is something omnivorous and herbivorous animals possess, but not carnivorous animals. This places the burden entirely on the pancreas, forcing it to produce large amounts of amylase to deal with the starch, cellulose, and carbohydrates in plant matter. Thus, feeding dogs as though they were omnivores taxes the pancreas and places extra strain on it, as it must work harder for the dog to digest the starchy, carbohydrate-filled food instead of just producing normal amounts of the enzymes needed to digest proteins and fats (which, when fed raw, begin to "self-digest" when the cells are crushed through chewing and tearing and their enzymes are released).

Nor do dogs have the kinds of friendly bacteria that break down cellulose and starch for them. As a result, most of the nutrients contained in plant matter—even preprocessed plant matter—are unavailable to dogs. This is why dog food manufacturers have to add such high amounts of synthetic vitamins and minerals (the fact that cooking destroys all the vitamins and minerals and thus creates the need for supplementation aside) to their dog foods. If a dog can only digest 40-60% of its grain-based food, then it will only be receiving 40-60% (ideally!) of the vitamins and minerals it needs. To compensate for this, the manufacturer must add a higher concentration of vitamins and minerals than the dog actually needs.

Is the dog an omnivore? Its dentition, internal and external anatomy, and physiology say it is not. Even its evolutionary history (discussed later) says the dog is a carnivore. So when people tell you the dog is an omnivore, ask: "What about this animal makes you think it is an omnivore?" Make them explain their position....."
From me now.... Keep an open mind and do not bow to propaganda filled with lies. If you are serious about mushing you must become serious about the health of dogs. Again, domestic K9's and wolves are 99.8% mitochondrialDNA Identical. Yes, even Chihuahuas. They are not omnivores.

On lighter note, :weee:clap It snowed good last night. The ground ain't froze yet so it's all gona melt(is already) but it's happening. Although the quad thing didnt work as planned it will with a little twerking. Another good thing happened too. A buddy brought me 3 3&1/2ftX2ftX2ft boxes of fish for my dogs. :clap
