Americauan With Bad Head Wound

Hello all,

A couple of days ago one of our Americauna hens got a bad head wound. It is about the size of a pencil eraser and is about 1/8 of an inch below her comb. It is really deep, you can see her skull. Also her right eye is apperaring sunken because I think there is a buildup of pus in the space around her eye. If you could please help that would be most welcome. We don't really want to put her down because she is our "attack" hen.

I don't know how to advise you on this, but I am sorry to hear of your hen's injury. I would think keeping the wound flushed with saline water and applying an antibiotic topical should be sufficient. Monitor for additional symptoms. If the wound is open, sometimes you can apply a bit of pressure to bring the pus to the surface. Keep her isolated, so no one pecks at it.

I dont know how the head wound look so I cant say anything unless I see it. But the best way is to get a needle and sold it back. then apply some Dr. Naylor Udder Balm on her head. This stuff works like magic. You could get it at the farm and fleet store.

As for her eye. You need to clean all the pus out everyday so that there are no more pus left in the eye. you need to go by some Tylan 200 injection. Although its for injection. Dont inject it into her. just spray some of that stuff into her eyes and it will be good in a couple of days.

Tylan 200 is good for everything. Although it only for cow use, you could for chicken too. Its good for, all type of sickness for your birds. Read direction carefully when using. use 1 cc for every bird only. You could inject it or just give it to them striaght. Keeps away from kids.

My feed store carries an antibiotic ointment for eyes (ophthalmic ointment.) Tiny little tube, like for people. At least it would keep her more comfortable.

Hopefully she'll be fine if you can keep her separated for a while and keep her comfortable.

Wow, sorry to hear about the injury. I am not a pro, but I am willing to share with you what has happened to me.

My Easter Egger Roos were fighting, they just do that. One got his head really torn up. I thought he would die it was so bad.

I removed him and left him alone in a box I use for hatching.

I took some tripple Antibiotic ointment and I gooed him all up. His head was so split open, I thought I saw his skull. And I gave him food and water. I checked on him and continued to goop him up with the antibiotics.

Today he lives and the top of his head looks like he has a mohawlk.

You could try blu kote for the wound but be careful not to get any in her eye. And for the eye, I had good luck with pen-aqueous for cattle on my two male ducks after a dog attack. It is a penicillin based injection designed for cattle so I had to get our local pharmacist to figure out the correct dosage for me (which I promptly forgot). I gave the ducks two or three shots a day with an insulin syringe (from the friendly pharmacist) for about two weeks and it cleared everything right up. It is an intramuscular injection so with the ducks I put it in their breast about 1/2 to 1 inch from their breastbone. I know you don't want to do this with a meat bird , but I'm not really sure about layers. We did it to save our ducks which a) will never be eaten and b) don't lay eggs so no worries here. She is doing much better!!!! Her wound has a nice, thick scab on it and I think that the connections that connect her skin to her skull are re-forming. As for the area around her eye the swelling has gone down and some yucky brown liquid is coming out of her wound (is that what the swelling is?).
