We have only had our hens about 3 months. We lost our favorite. Our Bard Rock was killed by a raccoon. We got him and buried him. She was my favorite as she would eat out of my hand. We discovered our Amerucana was missing and panicked. Soon discovered her coming out in the morning to eat then quickly ruining back to the barn. Took some time but found her well hidden nest. 13 eggs. Yay !!! Love the egg color. Our eggs are best we have ever eaten. Will never have to buy store eggs again. Trying to learn all we can. Ordering a new larger coop. But until it gets here. Scrambling on how to care for them our current coop only holds 6. Any help is appreciated. We love our chickens ! Should add we have 1 adorable little rooster Hen-ri.

Welcome to BYC. Are you allowing the hen to incubate her eggs?

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Sorry to hear you lost your favourite hen to a raccoon :hugs Losing flock members is always very sad. If you are letting your hen incubate the eggs I would try and keep her as she as you can. When they are on the nest they are a sitting duck as yiu would say. Vulnerable to predators if not some where secure.

The learning has lots of fabulous articles on keeping your birds happy safe and healthy. Here is the link if you have not already dropped by ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Wishing you the very best of luck in the future. Be sure to ask any questions that you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Sorry about the loss of your favorite. Do go to the learning center above. Many different threads within.

Welcome to BYC!

You're right...store bought eggs don't hold a candle to the ones our chickens provide fresh. And the convenience factor is nice...no running to the store for them.

Good luck with your flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the loss of your Barred Rock, good luck with the broody hen.

Sorry for your loss. Other raccoons are sure to take that one's place. Please check out the coops and predator sections for advice on protecting your flock.
