Hi All,

One of the many things I will ask as I prepare to take the plunge. I am looking at either barred rocks or austrolopes or a combination of the 2. #1. Can these breeds coexist? 2. About how much feed per bird per day? 3. Can laying hens be housed in the same coop/run area as broiler chickens?

Thanks in advance. I have been looking at coop designs and will shortly begin construction. This site has already been extremely informative and helpful

Hi &

. Glad you joined us! Is is perfectly fine to have different breeds of layers or duel purpose breeds together. It will make it easier if, they are close in age when you get them. You can do a search on this site about integrating hens. You will not want to put meat birds in with layers because Cornish cross are eating pooping machines and grow very fast. While layers and duel purpose chickens can have feed in front of them all the time, meat birds should only have food in front of them only 12 hours per day. Good Luck!

My flock is Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, and a lone Buff Orpington. Happy chickens.

Chris
