My silkie hen had a soft egg break inside her. I saw all the contents come out including the shell (which was like a skin). I'd like to give her a round of amoxicillin just in case but can find a clear answer on the dosage amount. What is the proper mg per pound? Is it given twice a day? Thanks!

The usual dosage for a chicken is around 50-57 mg per pound. It is given twice a day around 12 hours apart for 7-10 days. Is she around 1 1/2 to2 pounds of weight? An inexpensive kitchen gram or ounce scale will work to weigh her. Amoxicillin comes in capsules of 250 mg and sometimes 500 mg. If you have a 250 mg capsule, you can open it into 2 equal piles of powder on 1/2 slice on a soft piece of bread. Fold it over, and you have 2 doses of 125 mg. If she won’t take that you can smear a little peanut butter or jelly onto it. You can divide that capsule into 2-4 or 5 equal doses.
