Could he have mites? He preens constantly. What do you treat mics with. I have diatomaceous earth but I heard it was bad for them to breathe it.View attachment 3202095Brought him in out of the heat. His name is brooster! He’s a Isabel cuckoo cockerel, tame so far
Thanks for your helpLook at your birds at night, while roosting, with a good flashlight. The head lamps are great for this. you want to see the skin, around vents, under wings, and on necks. Lice are light colored small bugs, and mites are TINY dark specks that move.
Permethrin spray is good to use, easier than the permethrin dust.
Miserable little beasts!!!

Oh waaait, snaps, they're here!!!!!!! Uwwwwwwwww. I just wanaa come over and play. Wait, Raleigh, you're not too far away; only a couple hundred miles m a y b e!!!My girls and boy are here! Of course one extra so we will see what that one turns out to be…. I’m so happy!!! I forgot how tiny they are! And it’s only been 8 weeks!
So, ok, explain the "of course". Is that normal? What's up. I'm excited to hear ahem read about it.My girls and boy are here! Of course one extra so we will see what that one turns out to be…. I’m so happy!!! I forgot how tiny they are! And it’s only been 8 weeks!

My 20 ship 8/3; they don't say when they'll arrive. Due to space constraints I wouldOften, but not always, the hatchery will add an extra chick in case one doesn't make it. That's simpler for them than having to give you a refund.
Sometimes, more often in cold weather, they'll add "packing peanuts" -- the slang term for the "extra males for warmth" added to very small orders. Many hatcheries have moved away from that practice to using heat packs instead (personally, I don't mind free chicken dinners, but others are distressed by un-ordered cockerels).
Other hatcheries have various "free chick" promotions.
But other times you'll get exactly what you ordered and nothing more. Which is also fine. (though a free chick can be exciting).
