One of my ladies spent an hour this morning in the nest making noises and she was on there so long I kept checking on her. After an hour or so I saw her back running around the yard and so went to collect my egg.... but there was NO egg.

She only laid her first egg about 10 days ago and has not been as regular as my other 2 who started laying about 4 weeks ago and have laid an egg a day since.

I hope she's not having problems or possibly having an egg stuck that's not coming out, why would she have the egg 'urge' and then not lay?

Anyone have any idea what she was doing? Just nesting practice?

I have 3 new hampshire x white leghorn sweeties and i'm about 6 weeks into the egg laying business with my first chookies.

I would put her down as practicing at this point. Unless you see evidence of something more, she sounds like she is normal to me.

Thanks.
I should add, that there were no signs of egg eating or any strange soft or shell-less eggs.

As the others said.

New pullets can "practice" for up to 2 weeks at my place. Gets me really antsy, but there's an egg at some point in the nest.
