Hi everyone. It is time to introduce myself even though I have been a member for nearly a year!
I live in Western Australia and have had my own backyard chickens for 19 months. Originally coming from a farming background where we raised chickens, I have some knowledge of what is required.
I currently have 4 hens, two 19 months old and two 7 months old. The older chickens are a Golden Laced Wyandotte (Speckle), and a Silver Spangled Hamburg (Bobb). The two youngsters are Cream Legbars (Itsy and Bitsy).
I acquired Speckle as a day old chick, the only successful hatch from eggs my grandson incubated. Bobb arrived shortly after as a companion. The two Legbars were from eggs I gave a broody Speckle. She unfortunately left the nest for 24 hours, so incubation was completed via artificial means. The day old chicks were returned to her however she rejected the babies. Once again hand reared by me.
I love being a ‘chicken mum’ and enjoy listening to the ‘girls’ chatter to each other and the way they run to greet me. They are happy scratching away in the garden by day and roost in the coop (Le Palaise Poulet) which myself and hubby designed and built. Hubby complains about the poop and ruined garden, but I often see him sneaking pieces of cheese to them .
Speckle is top chook, followed by Bob, Bitsy, and Itsy. Unfortunately I haven’t seen an egg for quite a few months as they have had a heavy moult leading into winter, and won’t commence laying until the days lengthen again.
I enjoy being part of the online chicken community. Thanks for having me
