an odd toe disease

I have a chicken that had some large dirt-like build-ups on a few of her toes, (I thought that she had just gotten some mud on her toes) the build-ups got bigger, and then fell off, taking her toe-nails with them! Now another hen has got the same sort of bulid-ups on all of her toes, any ideas as to what this could be?

might be scaley leg mite... can you post pics? (if you use the search here there are several pics in those threads)
