I just had to share this sad story with a happy ending. Three years ago, we got a beautiful Blue Andalusian hen as an extra in an order of chicks. Over the past year, two blue babies have hatched, one growing up into a handsome rooster and the other was about 12 weeks and I still wasn't sure if it was a rooster or a hen. They were all the prettiest steely blue/gray color, and a favorite of our family!
Sadly, this summer we have been having a predator problem and our original blue hen disappeared. A few days later, the 12 week old blue was gone, and after searching I found of pile of beautiful feathers in the avocado orchard
. This left only our big blue rooster, who I was sure was safe. We have over 40 chickens, so the chances of all the blue ones getting eaten seemed really farfetched! However, he insists on roosting in a walnut tree instead of in the coop with everyone else, and Wednesday night, something got him. We ran out in the middle of the night but didn't see what it was and he was bleeding heavily...he didn't make it through the night.
Everyone was so depressed...it seemed like a bad twist of fate that the only blue chickens we had were the ones to fall victim. But, we were cheered up by the fact that we had a broody hen, sitting on 2 dud eggs, and were picking her up some chicks from the feed store Thursday afternoon. As I was looking at the calendar, I realized that she had been sitting on the two eggs for around 21 days, so we would know if they were really duds or not. I headed down to the coop to check under her and make sure nothing was rotten and about to explode, when I saw a tiny fuzzy head poking out from her wing.
Lo and behold, it was a beautiful, tiny, BLUE baby!!! A miracle baby! The very same day that we lost our blue rooster, a new blue chick hatched. A very happy ending to the tragedy of our blue chickens, and the little girl (fingers crossed) is happy with Mama Hen and her new sisters from the feed store. Just had to share the story...thanks for reading and enjoy the pics!!!
