Analysis on the eggs that did not hatch *8 out update

Quote:
Give them more time. Humidity is really not that big of a deal as it is made out to be. Egg just has to lose between 12-15% or so of water weight. 15 billion ways to do humidity levels. Temperature is the biggest concern. Give it another day or two and then crack them all open to see what happened. Not all eggs hatch.

But Silkie Chicken If Big IF, I have not given up yet) nothing else hatches is 8 out of 18 going into lock down acceptable on shipped eggs? Remember 4 of the 18 appeared when candled at lock down not to be fully developed. When I say not fully developed on day 10 candle I drew around where the chick had progressed on the shell and at lockdown the 4 I am talking about still had more room than I expected at the bottom of shell. At least 2 eggs were only half way blacked out. The other 2 the shells (not the body mass inside), were too dark for me to make a good judgement. I still have the few small long eggs in there one of which I know was moving at lockdown but never pipped. The book says never set odd shaped eggs I just found that out. But at the time of starting I did not know realize eggs were odd shaped just small and long. My friend is the one that told me that.
What I want to know in all honesty is should I later next year try incubation again. Or did I foul up somewhere along the way.

I don't want to try again if I killed these chickens. Not worth it to me or maybe put under

never give up!!! All the great incubating people on here did not have great starts-heck I never hatched out 1 of 40 eggs I tried- then the next hatch was still pathetic-but with each hatch The better I got-the more patient I got the more I learned-the more I stuck to what didnt work and what did-you'll never know unless you keep going:)

Yeah I knew shipped eggs were a gamble but I did not know it would or could affect after lockdown. I only had 4 not develop and 2 quitters early on, those are the things I would expect to see with shipped eggs. Not quitters after lock down.

On a side note I have been talking back with a lady about the purchase of a Showgirl roo. Well she emailed me today, and his ship date is approaching quickly

And she actually offered to put a few eggs in the post for me.

I about fell over when I read that. I am not totally sure I am ready to try incubation again this early, but there is no way I can turn down her eggs. I had already made up my mind to not try hatching again and if I did it would be my own eggs in the spring. I am sure I have lost my mind for even trying again after the heartbreak of 10 still not hatching. My plan is to put them in the bator late at night and hopefully sleep through the first few hours of pipping and zipping to reduce stress. I hope I do better this time.
Thanks everyone for the help and information.

Oh my Cathy this smiley was so me the last 2 days. If only they had a smiley with a persons face glued to th top of an incubator to go along with it. I do not think anything is going to happen in that bator with the eggs left. But it looks like I will be setting more eggs in a week or 2

Have I completely lost my mind! But my showgirl will be here soon, which is all I have ever really wanted. If he comes with a few eggs it can't hurt to toss them in the bator and give it another go. The only problem with that is my heart will be in there even more with lavender chicks a possibility. So between now and then I have to focus on not getting emotionally involved till they are chicks and not while they are eggs. So that is my project for now. That and catching up my history! I plan to open the unhatched eggs in the next day or 2 but will candle before hand to make sure.
Back to the American and French Revolutions! Ugggghhh

Give it a little more time. You may still have some hatch. On day 25 I candled the last egg. No movement. So carefully I pipped the egg. She was gone. Fully developed just didnt hatch. But the one that hatched day 24 is doing great shes just a little smaller than the others. Notice I keep saying she? I am willing them to all be pullets

So today I opened the eggs that did not hatch. As I expect 2 should have been thrown out way back and did not develope\\ past a few days. Now of the eggs left that should have hatched 5 I would not have kept anyway. And there were no showgirls in any of them. I am not really sure what went on now the air sacks were never pipped, their heads never uncurled. I had 3 pretty good size chicks in the eggs, their yolk sacs were no where near being absorbed, but the eggs were also bigger. THe one egg that was rocking right after lock down, the tiny one, it's yolk sack was completely absorbed so I think IF I had stepped in it may have made it. But I would not have kept it for my flock. About 7 had yolk sacs 1/2 to 3/4 absorbed. I do not believe them to have been shrink wrapped except maybe one. For the most part the inter membrane was still moist. It was surrounding them but moist, clear except for veins, and stretchy. THe one I think was shrink wrapped its inter membrane was not clear 100% one part of it was not white but close. I am puzzled. I really dreaded opening the eggs but how else can I learn if I don't. And I don't want to be killing anymore chicks! I did take pics if someone is interested but did not think this was the place for that. I was hoping to do better, especially now after seeing how far they made it. So Sad! I will try harder next time if that is humanly possible. I will have a proper burial for the chicks and continue to learn as I move forward. I am disappointed in myself at this point.
If anyone has any tips for my next attempt I would love to hear them. I think finding 2 temp and humidity readers that say the same thing would be a huge bonus.
How can I tell by looking at the condensation on the glass window what the correct humidity looks like? Can someone post a pic with 40% humidity and 75% humidity looking down on the bator at the glass? That would help me a great deal.
The temps seem to have held true enough on both the digital and the mercury thermometer, but the 2 humidity readings were very different 10 to 15%.

Thanks everyone for helping me out, you guys are the best!
Tisha
