A Partridge Plymouth Rock hen with 6 little surprises! She is the first Partridge Rock I have ever had that has gone broody! I am thrilled. At least 3 of them are part Brahma and I will probably rehome all the chicks when mama is done with them.

I'll take pics this weekend!

This is what happens when breeding season is over and summertime fun begins

She's nice and wide and her color is not too light. It's really hard to see her actual pencilling until you get her out under natural light and get close ups of the feathering, her tail set would by high for the standard/show, just like all my bird's are.

When you can get her outdoors, a shot where she is standing still from front a rear is useful to judge how far her legs are apart and the comb pic isn't quite close enough to see how many though it's a nice single straight blade.

You want clean pencilling, good and dark/thick on those chest feathers and the feathers back to the tail. Not dotting or uneven or kind of lobsided/broken.

My own groups bred went into disaster, keeping the best Roo, created awesome roos, and completely DQ hens for shafting (a very light central shaft - like a welsummer). I have to sell em all and start again.

I got better size, better feather, better tail set and DQ for shafting

this fall or spring and get in show stuff. At least I now know a show breeder for eggs.

In the meantime I have the Dels and Sizzles. And you learn even if you're working other breeds... Just some days you want to

Your Partridge Rock is beautiful. I have 5 of them that are 9 weeks old and I'm just starting to see how beautiful they are going to be. Helena is beautiful, too!

Awww so cute!!! Congrats!!

I thought hatching time was about over as well. Now after hatching & selling a ton of Swedish ducklings and thinking I was done for this year, two of my ducks have gone broody. They won't even let me get close enough to their nests to count how many they are sitting on. So curious to see if any of them hatch...they will be first time mommies.

Thank you. She has great pencilling and nice shape but as walkswithdog says...to high of tail set.

And poor Helena. The roos have her nearly bald and naked. She probably enjoyed the three week respite. Maybe she will want to stay with her babies for a month and that will help heal her more. I have a saddle for her but she is an escape artist with those things, lol.

SunAngel...the breeding season has never officially stopped here either this year. I don't know what's up

REGARDING "BROODIES"........

I have a "black roundhead" hen (game chicken) that went broody just about 3 weeks ago. Should have some interesting chicks hatch this week.

My ONLY rooster is what appears to be a "Golden Comet" (or some such Red Sex-Link).

I'm very curious to see what the chicks will look like and especially what their appearances will be when mature.

This broody hen (named "Cookie" because she has a comb) snuck off under a stoop at a side-door of my house and tucked herself and her eggs away where they can't be reached. She is "anti-social".

Typical of broody hens, when I attempted to move the eggs to my brooding pen while she was away from her nest, she quickly returned and pecked the dickens out of me. I decided to leave her be.

IF I get some chicks this week, I'll try to get some pictures and start a new thread just to "show them off". Ha-Ha!

Helena the buff orp tried to take off my husbands hand a few times while he gathered up the chicks.

The Partridge Rock on the other hand went smoothly. Hubby loaded the chicks in a cardboard box and was going to nab mama when she came close to the box. Well mama just climbed in the box on top of the chicks and we moved them hastle free
