I would really like to breed Andalusians, extremely preferably starting from stock that has free-ranged and is similar to and descended from Spanish farm birds. Picking up from Tractor Supply or ordering from a conveyor-belt hatchery isn't what I am looking for, nor is getting a 2nd generation of birds who came from there.

This is especially so as it's thought (Heritage Poultry Conservancy) some people have "made" Andalusians from crosses of Black and White Spanish, or worse, Black and White Leghorns, and the same may well go on today at the chick mills. Really, who knows what one is getting from them.

I would like the birds that genuinely have excellent flying ability, better than Leghorns, excellent foraging ability, and get along better with other or added flock members than for example Leghorns do.

But, the Livestock Conservancy shows practically no one as breeders, including after you pay for membership -- I have only one lead though not producing until April, fair enough -- and there seem none posted here, and the Facebook group is almost dead.

Does anyone have suggestions or leads?

Thank you!

Wow, quiet isn’t it? I’m guessing in spring you may find certain rarer breeds on eBay if you can’t find local breeders (and you are avoiding industrial hatcheries).

I’m a newbie chickener but hatched all my original chickens from eBay eggs and now some of their progeny as well. It is a gamble, but I have breeds I would not otherwise get locally. (I also needed to avoid hatchery chickens for various other reasons).

Thank you for your reply!

Thing is with eBay eggs, unless the seller posts more information than they usually do, for all I know the parent birds were from a mass hatchery with 30 or more generations of hatchery breeding, that on top of that might never have been the actual breed anyway, and if so I might as well just order straight from Cackles or wherever.

Maybe this is a bird that just does not have a lineage in the US among individual breeders?
