Ok, so I don't live on a farm (just in the middle of one), I don't have multiple varieties of poultry or fowl, nor do I have an excessive # of one variety. So, compared to those who do, I have a lot of free time where the goons are concerned, is what I'm telling you. Lol.
I say all of that bc we have basic tenets that we follow regarding these birds:
*Not much info out there abt them
*they aren't very smart
*they aren't domesticated like chickens (I've never had chickens so no clue what that means)
*females say some varation of a 3 syllable word & can mimic males but males have 1 syllable & don't mimic females.
Myself, not a farmer, 1 kind of bird, only 6 of them & enjoy spending time with them - has had a different experience.
My girls wander around buckwheating or screaming come back or muttering cocoa, or in the case of the twins, screeching like prehistoric birds- but they don't whistle or sing. Oh they do make an odd noise when they're moody. I can't begin to spell the sound, kind of a vibrating brrrrrrtt - freaks them out when I do it back to them. Rosie's pretty laid back. The twins, we're working on it.
But my boys - LOVE attention. They compete for it. If I'm holding or petting one, another will do whatever they think of to divert that attention to themselves.
All 3 of my boys now mimic, whistle, and "sing". Sing being whistling, but drawn out, not short outbursts.

Scroll down the side and listen to the chime. It's close to me singing "good morning". All 3 of the males mimic that back to me, everytime I say it, & now when the see me coming w/o me saying it.
I mentioned once that Blue says something that sounds like "for REal". All 3 of them do it now. When they do that one, it's a diversion bc I'm paying attention to someone else. In Nugget's case, if that doesn't work, he does his mournful baby tweet tweets, & if that doesn't work, I get a peck. A gentle peck, a nudge, but by golly, he wants attention.
Blue's agitation level going up because he's not getting attention shows in the pacing and speed inwhich he repeats "for real for real".
PJ doesn't get bent out of shape about attention. He says it, you repeat it. As long as I've said good morning, he's good. But if the other 2 are for realing over and over, he chimes in. The girls don't partake in any of this.
They do the cockeyed look. But when I'm holding them, Blue and Nugget maintain eye contact (both eyes) w/me while they sing or whistle or converse or serenade- whatever you want to call it. It's actually a pleasant sound.
They love having their necks stroked, top and under. Blue likes his wattles & head rubbed, he'll even move his body to accommodate where he wants rubbed, like a cat. They other 2 are more sensitive abt their wattles.
I'm doing the same when working with the twins, hold them close, make sure their feet are flat and secure on my hand, then start stroking them where tolerated. Bella actually fell asleep nuzzled up against my fleece jacket the other day during this, and she's getting easier to pick up. Mouse...screams like a banchee the entire time.
