I am getting the first week of april some baby chicks. MY plan is to place paper towels on the floor until they know food, then change to beddings shavings. Can I use and be safe hardwood shavings/ i can get them for practically nothing, from someone who makes furniture with hardwood., is it safe, for the chicks and the full frown chickens to use as bedding

Do you know what kind of "hardwood" it is? I know that walnut has toxins in it that kills many other plants around it ~ I don't know if it would affect chickens.

What I have read is that hardwood is more likely to mold...so you have to keep an eye on it and change it more often.

I don't know for sure about chickens, but black walnut will kill a horse in a hurry. If it's walnut, I'd stay away from it.
