Don't want to bump an old post but something I found works extremely well is flush nippers. Extremely tedious, but almost no pointy bits left over.

My take is that it is fine to bump an old thread to add information like this, as somebody could stumble upon it in a search and find that useful.

I actually just cut the cloth leaving the pokies long. Then I put on a thick pair of gloves and bend them all over.

Yes, Tin snips or diagonal cutter work just fine!
