Been about 2 years since I have been on here and now i have some more ducklings and need some advice! I had a mama sitting on 13 eggs. I can’t even remember how many hatched. One more ducking is trying to hatch but mama left the nest with the other babies and left it. I can hear it moving around in the egg so i have it surrounded by towels and sitting on a rice bag warmer to try and keep it warm for its arrival.

One duckling drowned, 2 mama killed, 1 got his head pecked and is doing okay but can’t walk and has little head/neck strength. I think he will live if he can just get enough strength back. He also is bundled in the same towels and rice warmer as the egg is.

I separated mama from the ducklings and put her with the other grown duck. She is mad and won’t stop quacking at her ducklings but I don’t want her to kill them. I unfortunately didn’t prepare to have a mean mana so I don’t have a brooder or heat lamp ready. Is it wise to leave the babies in the run in the day and coop at night. I live in TN and it’s been 85 today. Sick duckling and egg are just going to chill with me in the house with warm blankets.

I am going to try to find some vitamin B( does tractor supply sell it) so that the sick ducklings legs don’t get weak and I am spraying peck wound with vetericyn. It’s been 2 years since i had ducklings so I am a little out of practice. Everything sound good? What should I do differently?

Wow, that's so unfortunate about the mother. If it were me I guess I would let the mama stay with the babies only under supervision and try to do that as much as possible. If you can be assured that she's ready to be a good mom, let her have it, but if you see signs of bad behavior, keep them apart. Sounds like your temps are pretty warm, but depends on night temps, as far as leaving them without a heat lamp. I would definitely make sure you have duckling starter that has niacin for their development, and constant access to food and water.

I really don’t want to put mama with the babies. She has already killed 2 and I really don’t want to lose another one. They all have food and water and they get brewers yeast mixed in with their food.

I am about to go pick up some vitamin B for the sick duckling. He seems he can’t hold his head up and his legs aren’t working great but vitamin B should help that. Thanks for the help!

I don’t think the sick duckling is going to make it sadly. Egg has a crack in it tho so hopefully the hatch goes smooth. I decided to let the healthy ducklings be with mama because she was going crazy! She seems to be doing okay with them right now.

How are things going today with mama and ducklings @happy duck
sadly sick duckling died last night. It seemed like it was doing good and I thought it had a chance but I guess it just was too injured. My guess it that mom stepped on it and hurt his lungs becuase as it was dying there was lots of labored breathing and gasping for air.

Egg dried out and the duckling died before it could make it out of the egg. The bill made it out and there was lots of peeping but I guess he didn’t have the moisture he needed to make it out of the shell.

Despite all that I decided to put mama back the with babies and they are doing great. Not sure why she was aggressive with some of them but she is being good now. Thanks for asking!
