Another “how to reduce coop smell organically” question.

Coop front facing West. No window(s) on the back (but could add). Audie bought the coop from somewhere and they delivered it. She refused to let me build one :he After 27+ years of marriage I pick my battles and I’m gonna leave it at that. So then, it is what it is.

Ventilation up high and under the front eaves should be easy.

Sides easily ventilated… when not taking inclement weather into account, which we absolutely have to do.

We’re thinking add a couple windows on the back for starters.

Okay so I’m open to ideas, all of ‘em!

Pictures got buried.

(Saysfaa, it wouldn’t let me but thanks ;-)

Oh. Well I'm not a PFM and have edited some of my thread names. Maybe it needs to be done in the first day or so, like editing posts.
Interesting. I was not able to edit my titles before getting a PFM.

I think you have a typo above. TON not tad.

This is what ventilation under the soffits, at the gable (and through the ridge) looks like when you have lots of ventilation in shed to coop conversion in a colder climate.

A few 4" holes aren't going to do nearly enough to provide adequate ventilation.
Awaiting the pictures...

Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

I agree with others here, a poop board under the roosts is a game changer. I scoop their poop from that every few days, and the floor bedding stays so dang clean that I only change it twice a year(right before winter, and in spring).

Sweet PDZ does a great job deodorizing and is all natural I believe. Stir it into your flooring!
Ditto. Chickens poop mostly at night, when they're roosting. Get that poop in a group well managed, and you've won half the battle.

I use pine shavings on the floor, and PDZ on the poop board. I scoop once a day, takes about 2 minutes. Poop goes in a covered bucket, then dumped in the compost bin. PDZ is fine for organic garden, if that matters to you.

In the summer, the bucket might smell a bit, but the coop is fine. This time of year, I don't smell anything unless someone has dropped a fresh cecal poop.
