After two weeks my bigger chicken are in a protected Coop. I bought two baby chicks that stayed in a brooder in my garage. Last night something go in the cage and killed both baby chicks. It had to be small. A mouse or a lizard. How can something have gotten to my garage and through small bars on a cage? What can I do to protect baby chicks?

You could have rodents living in your garage. Could you keep the chicks elsewhere? I don't think a mouse would eat a chick, so it's probably some kind of larger rodent, like a rat. Do you keep feed in your garage?

Please post pictures of the cage you had the chicks in. Perhaps a rat could have gotten in. We may be able to advise you ways to make it safer.

We have cats so don't have rats but find mouse bodies in our yard on occasion. Our brooders are in the house regardless.

So sorry as that had to be devastating. I too would think it's a rat or weasel.

Also where in this world are you located? This will tell us what kinds of predators you may be dealing with.
I live in West Palm Beach florida. Never had a rat in garage raise 3 there no problem but I did buy a larger bag of chick feed that’s is there and a couple bags of hay I recently got.
