I've read several threads and have not seen anything related to my question.

I bought a 40# bag at the feed store, its labeled Oil Sunflower Seed, and it is indeed small black seeds.

But the protein says only 9% min? Is this a different type of seed or do the bags just say minimum? I don't quite understand.

Do your bags say a higher protein content?

I'm kind of guessing when everyone is referring to numbers, they might be basing off 100 lbs? That would make BOSS 22.5% protein for every 100 lbs, is that correct?

The labels are % by weight; that's why sunflower seeds are treats; high fat, low protein. And that's why feeds are ground, so the animal doesn't pick out the yummy bits and leave the rest, making for an unbalanced diet. Mary

I've read varing protein amounts so I'm just trying to clarify that part. I certainly don't intend to feed BOSS as main diet. I am trying to understand why some say they are high protein and some say low. I can't find any soy free feed that is easily accessible so I'm considering making my own. And starting to sprout for them too. I'm not happy with feed choices here, and $28 for a 40# bag of organic feed with soy is outrageous I think. I want to get away from soy even if the rest is not all organic.
