Hello from Snohomish, WA - we're on the wet side of the mountains, about an hour north of Seattle. I'm happy to be getting my first chicks this week - a mother's day gift to myself. Have a brooder ready and a brother with chickens on speed dial.

can't say for sure yet that chickens are addicting - but this forum sure is. I've learned tons & appreciate all the folks willing to share their knowledge and experiences with us newbies. Have coop designs printed off & in hubby''s hands, and a brooder (previous life as a rock pallet with sides, refurbished with poutltry wire) set up in the 4 season porch, just off the living room. Scoped out all the feed stores within a 30 minute drive - checking out supplies, advice & chicks!

Plan to start with 6 chicks of various breeds - looking at RIR, Australorp, Wyandotte, Easter Eggers, Sex-linked reds, maybe Brahma or Wellsummer. Figure if I have a wide list of acceptable- to-me breeds, I can look for good, healthy-looking chicks - rather than have my heart set on something specific. I just want friendly, healthy, & easy -- egg & manure providers. Hope I can keep to my personal goal of 6 - just read about chicken math & hope I don't catch the bug!

I'm sure I'll have a surprise problem or 2 to ask about & feel good about the back-up offered in the forums. (Who knew there was something called pasty butt!!) Thanks in advance everyone!

Welcome to BYC.

Hello and :welcome

I still remember the first time I found out what pasty butt is... I thought it was an odd name, huh?
Have you thought about Buff orpingtons? Very friendly breed, and pretty good layers too.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have, and enjoy the site. :frow

they were on my list until I talked to my brother today who said Orpington's broodiness may become an issue - trying to keep them out of the nest?? not planning to have a rooster (fingers crossed) or hatch chicks, just want eggs to eat.

what do you think?? is broodiness a big problem?

jersey giants?? do you have many? - I saw some info on them, they seem interesting - big bird & docile? tell me what your experiences are with them - don't recall seeing them in the feed store - where did you get yours?
