I have 27 barred rock, I have a 10 X 12 Coop my son is still working on. He is also building a 20 x 20 run.
How many chickens will it hold? How many hen boxes should he build?

Coop...120sq. ft @ 4sq. ft. per bird=30 chickens
Run...400sq. ft.@ 10sq. ft. per bird=40 chickens

Your run will handle 40 chickens however you are restricted to 30 due to the size of your coop. Keep in mind that these are only recommendations. Some birds may want more space some may need less. Going by your dimensions you will be ok with the 27 that you have.

Edit:Forgot to add...I have one nest box for every 5 hens.

What Chook said! It's espcially important if you live in an area that gets really rotten weather that keeps the birds inside. I'm in NC and the only time my birds don't go out is when there is snow on the ground. They even go out in downpours from a thunderstorm but not snow. They are good ol' southern chickens, lol.

So you aren't going to want to have more than you have in your coop. They are going to need "breathing room". You aren't going to need any insulation come winter because unless you get a freak snow, they are going to be outside most of the time. Ventilation is going to be your biggy. Vents up high, maybe even a roof vent.

My son are going to put 3 windows and cover them with welded wire. Thanks for all the helpfull info. Please keep it comming as I am a frist time chicken owner. I need all the help I can get. Thanks!!!
