Another integrating question - but in reverse

biological/medical quarantine:

BYC Medical Quarantine Article
Wow.... so much to learn about this new hobby of mine, thank you for that great article about quarantining and disease. Wondering what lengths I need to go to today to set up an area for the four new chicks I'm getting tomorrow. How large of a space do they need? Do they need a run and an enclosed coop for the month or since it's summer, can they just be exposed to the elements 24/7 as long as predators can't get them?

They need the same amount and kind of space any chicken in your care would need. They would need to have shelter from wind and rain.

You have been given some excellent advice by some of BYC's pundits! Another thing to consider is this, since you don't yet have the new chickens. Do you really want to get more? You have a peaceful happy family in a suitable amount of room. Do you want to risk changing that? Six chickens is plenty to handle, they'll give you a lot of eggs. I would advise you to not get more.....

Very good points and great food for thought. Thankfully I have 24 hours to ponder this. Thanks!

Thanks for all the information, thoughts and advice. After reviewing and contemplating it all, I am going to take the suggestion to not add any more to my flock. I will surrender the two roosters and then have 6 chicks that I have raised from 3 days old while I get more experience with chicken-keeping. You're all right - my coop and run is perfect for 6 chickens but probably not comfortable for more than that. I'll spend the next year getting to know these six, spoiling them rotten, and if chicken math hits next year, I'll deal with it then.

Thanks everyone. That takes a lot of preparation and pressure off of me. My chicken math hit early and I was being impulsive.

That's good to hear! I look forward to hearing about your further adventures with your flock!
