Hi all,
This is my second time posting about something odd with my hens... but this is a different hen.
Her name is Midnight. I got her a few months ago from someone who said she was picking on the other hens all the time and she couldn't get it to stop. Since I got her, I've kept her in the sanctuary with my other hens who were recovering from severe feather damage from over mating. She's only been in a space with 3 to 4 other hens this whole time with no access to any roosters, and they all get along fine. She even bonded with Blossom, who she looks a lot like except for their colors. When I got her, she had a bald spot on her back from an animal attack in her previous home. The owner thought the feathers weren't gonna grow back. Then about two months ago, she started a heavy molt, and she did regrow those feathers back as well as a whole bunch of her body and head feathers. However, the snag is with her tail.
I have some pictures that I took today, but her tail feathers have been regrown for quite some time now, at least over a month, yet the sheaths just refuse to come off. As of today, I'm seeing that she's now lost some of those tail feathers and appears to be regrowing new ones. I know she has some lice I have treated her for, but I haven't gotten rid of it yet. Other than that, she's healthy and was laying before she started her molt. She hasn't gotten back to laying yet, but she's still molting so that's no surprise.
I'm just trying to figure out why those sheets won't come off her feathers. She's on 20% all flock with oyster shells for calcium on the side. I also give them daily treats of a seed mix with mealworms and shrimp. As far as I can tell, they get everything they need and she's the only one who's ever had this problem.
Has anyone else dealt with this before?
