Your rooster being aloof is normal. They are always on watch for any potential threat to their hens. He sounds like he's a good boy.
Oh yes you're right, I think I didn't word that well lol. But totally agree we are loving having him join the flock. The first thing he did when he arrived was to start picking up bits of food and taking it over to the hens, so sweet to watchHello, welcome to BYC!
It is a bit of a misconception, that roosters protect the flock. They alert the hens to danger. They don't, as a general rule, fight off predators.
That said, I love roosters, and can't imagine my flock without them.
