Hi, my name is Jacquie. I just came here to introduce myself, and I find the last newbie here is Mike, also from NJ! I am a bit north and west of Mike, tho, living in Florence, a town bordered on it's left by the Delaware River. We started raising chickens last Spring, so we've had them for a year now. We had purchased 6 little chicks last March, but one turned out to be a rooster, which was quite an egg-sperience.

We had him with us through the summer, but knew he needed to be relocated, so we eventually gave him to a friend's farm. So now we have 5 hens, and they are wonderful layers! My husband and myself have a large house, and my son, d-i-l and 3 kids live here, too. Her Dad built the coop, and we've had no problems, really. We often let them free range in on our large property last summer, but this Spring, we had a scare, when a hawk came swooping down and almost made off with one of our girls! We were stunned, to say the least. Now we've decided that we have to be in the yard with them, and we'll probably wait until the leaves are on the trees before we feel comfortable letting them run loose!

So that's my story. I hope to learn a lot here and make some great friends!

Here is a picture from the back corner of the flat part of our 3 acre property, including the chicken coop. I guess you can say it's the view that our girls get every day!

PS. My avatar is a pic of one of our hens. Her name is Elaine.

And what a lovely story! Yes, those hawks can cause trouble. I can't free range my birds unless I am out there with them to supervise.

Elaine is beautiful!

You might like to chat with other members in your state thread and see who is out there!....

Great to have you aboard and enjoy your beautiful flock!

you may want to make them a sizeable covered run for times when you can't supervise their outdoor activities. Hawks are quite brazen and will even take a bird a few feet away from you. Foxes can do the same.

Welcome to BYC - I am located North of you a few miles from the Delaware River. The river constitutes a flyway for birds of prey. Greatest migrations/movements are spring and autumn, but immature or non mated birds are traveling all of the time.
