Hello All - I've been visiting the site for months (learning about raising urban chickens) and thought it was time to actually become a member now that we have our chicks!
I'm not new to chickens, but it's been 20+ years since I've kept them. My wife, 2 kids, and I decided to convert our old dog-run into a chicken run since our spoiled Springer Spaniel, Theo, is always in the house
. The run is 16x8 feet with the coop built into my garden shed where the old dog house was. I'll post picture if folks are interested. When the hens get bigger it'll be interesting to see if they like what I've made for them as far as nesting boxes and roost; modifications may be needed.
About 10 days ago, we went and picked out our 3 pullets from DeYoung's Feed Store in Woodinville; the staff there was pleasant and helpful. We got a RIR named Ruby, a Delaware name Rose, and a Silver Laced Wynadotte named Roxy (Hence my username "R3"). It's been a joy not only watching my 6 year old son take to chickens, but it's always nice to spend quality time with the family during this adventure. We picked these breeds not only for egg production, but because of their personalities. They should fit in nicely.
After just a few short days, the pecking order seems to be established. Rose is the boss, Ruby is laid back, and Roxy does whatever the other are doing. I can't believe how fast they grow!
As a Wildlife Biologist, I've always enjoyed interacting and studying animals of all kinds. I think this will be fun for the whole family.
Anyway, I look forward to interacting on this site and thank all in advance for contributing.
Matt
