Hello All,
My name is Theresa and I'm brand new to the site and new to the world of chickens. We purchased our first chicks in April, they are now 9 weeks old. Been talking about getting them for years and finally decided to take the plunge this year. We were going to start with 3 or 4 chicks but ended up with six! LOL I ended up coming home initially with 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Barred Rocks and a week later 2 Americaunas. They have been so much fun to watch grow and change into their small adult selves. Neither my hubby or I have ever had chickens but now we have some acreage and it seemed like a fun addition to our family that includes a 1 year old yellow lab and 9 year old cat.

I have spent a bunch of time looking online to learn about my birds. Seems like every question I Googled always ended up referring me to BYC, so figured I may as well join the fun!

The girls have been spending oodles of time outside in a former kennel area we have but I have been bringing them into the garage to the brooder at night still because we have honestly not figured out how big or what style of coop to build. I need to pick some brains here for that answer!

Thanks in advance for all of your help! Looking forward to "meeting" everyone!

Welcome! You'll find lots of people here put the chicks before the coop.

Look at the coop pages for ideas, and build bigger than you need, they are addictive! My 8 turned in to 100.

My goodness! Just looking at all the chicks I can see why one might start accumulating!

Rule of thumb is to allow 4-5 sq.feet per bird in the coop, excluding roosts & nest boxes., and 10 sq.feet per bird in the outdoor run. When chickens feel crowded they act out by bullying, feather pecking and at extreme cannibalism.
