I have been wanting to get chickens for quite some months now and thought I could wait until the fall, BUT...............I couldn't! A friend talked me into doing it now. So here I am, talked my hubby into it, got my kiddos all excited about it(twin girls 6, boy 4) and told them we would just get 3 maybe 4 chicks. So we have 3 week old chicks now, 2 RIR, 2 EE, 1 BO and 1 BR. I am pondering getting 1 light Brahma and 1 dark Brahma from that same friend in 2 weeks when she is ready to sell her chicks. She also has a blue cochin that I have my eye on, but I think I would rather have the Salmon Faverolle. I am loving this already but so can't wait for them to go out in the coop. It's been done for 5 days, but the nights are still too cold and there is no way hubby is putting lighting out there "for a bunch of farm animals that aren't mine. I built the coop, the rest is yours."
People think I am absolutely nuts for doing this and it's just not something people in our area do. but wait until the eggs come and come they will by golly! i am sure i have at least 2 roos in there, but time will tell. and of course one of them has to be my favorite, it's the BR, Cruella DeVille. this bird is massive with legs like tree trunks and just started to really feather this week. but so sweet. it squwaks so loud when i try to pick her up and runs like the dickens, but i still do. my hubby thinks she is a vulcher. do they sell those at feed stores?
