Hello everyone,
I am "relatively" new here. Though I have been reading for a couple weeks and even posted a time or two. I just found this thread so decide to introduce myself. I am in Washington, like several others here. We just finished raising 30 barred rocks and a few EE's to build my parents flock back up. I am seriously thinking of raising some new birds this spring. Not sure which breed but love the big birds that lay well and prefer big dark eggs. I am up for ideas on breeds that might match that criteria??????? I would also like something that has somewhat of a market if I decide to forray into breeding. We have bred rottweilers in the past. Back when people did not know what a rottweiler was. We now breed and show American Paint Horses. I have posted a bunch of pics of some of our "HERD"

So a big hello to all and I hope to get to know most of you and learn a lot from the board.

Ken

Wow, you have a real farm going there!

I love the pictures of your birds... If you're looking for dark eggshells, you can do no better than Marans. They come in a lot of different feather varieties. There is a nice thread on BYC about the Marans and their eggs; a lot of BYCers with those have added pics of their birds and eggs to that thread. If you do a search for Marans, it should be one of the first that comes up as its a fairly recent and popular thread.

Your horses are very pretty. What style of riding do you prefer?

Welcome You certainly have some beautiful horses. I have several different kinds of chickens. I thought my Orpingtons and Australopes were big but I recently went to a show and saw some Wyndottes and Dark Brahamas (sp) They were even bigger than my chickens. I also have Giant Cochins which are very big but they don't lay as well as some. But they certainly are beautiful I guess the darkest egg layers are the Marans they lay very dark brown eggs check out feathersite.com and check out the different breeds it also tels you what color eggs they lay. Hope this helps Micki

Welcome to BYC! Beautiful animals you have there... all of them.

Welsummers also lay a dark kinda reddish egg and are often easier to find than Marans.

Marans might be the better choice for breeding and selling eggs/chicks though since they are harder to find in most places.

Personally I just prefer trail riding but our stallions kids have excelled in western and Hunter Under saddle, with many doing very well in the show circuit. .We show mostly halter ourselves. I have researched chickens some and have thougt of the marans or maybe welsummers.......... I also am intrigued some ny the blue wyandotes. Time will tell.

Thanks for the welcome

send her to our website on the original post. Lots of horse pictures as well as some friends links. Foaling time is just around the corner and when you feel she is old enough there are lots of people now that have their mares on webcams for foaling. Very cool to watch from home and see a new foal come into the world.

Hi neighbor. I am a few hours north of you. Your horses are beautiful along with your chickens. Whenever I think of Tacoma, it never involves anything with animal or land.
