I talked to the guy at the farm when I returned my rented incubator. He said he has mostly RIR but there are a couple other types of chickens as well. To me, in my newb opinion, they don't look like any picture I have ever seen of a young RIR but I don't know for sure. These are my first chicks.

They all have yellow legs.

Can any of you tell me what you think their breed and sex might be?

Sunshine:

Sunshine may look white in the pictures but he/she is more of a pale tan color with some darker tan on his/her back and oddly is getting some darker brown pin feathers coming in. Very confusing.

And here are some pictures of the three together:

Can I just say I LOVE the look of your cat...like "Ummmm Lunch!"

I think they are all mixes IMO...Lucky looks like a male and the other 2 are confusing me.

The cat is Milo...he was more curious and used to get closer until one of the chicks pecked him in the head. Now he watches admiringly (

) from a distance. I think the chicks have caught on that he is "afraid" of them because they have fun chasing him when the mood strikes them.

I agree with the advise to go back and ask him exactly what kind he is breeding because yours are not RIR's. I have no clue what they are. If he tells you RIR's again ask him why they are white-ish and not RED.

Thanks everyone. I will have to call the farm where I got the chicks and ask them what other breeds they have running around.

I was praying Sunshine would be a pullet. I figured Lucky was a roo and we arent allowed to keep roosters here. My neighbor across the street had one and her neighbor nextdoor complained. She had to get rid of the rooster.

The person who complained has since moved and I was hoping if I got a few more pullets for Lucky and supplied the neighbors with some complimentary eggs, I might get away with not being reported. If I have two roos then that's pretty much out of the question.

I live in a neighborhood and I am friendly with the neighbors pretty much but I think that may be pushing it.

I hadn't planned on keeping the chicks we hatched. It started as a science fair project for my daughter and we were going to return them to the farm afterward. However, I didn't plan on getting as attached as I have and my daughter more so than me.

Phooey on my luck
