Another Way to Water Chickens

I tried a rabbit waterer with my girls, but I never ever saw anyone drink from it. They prefer the regular waterers much more.

Hi there, why don't you guys check out my byc page for another idea. Kind of like the rabbit waterers, but a little less messy (no drips) and the chickens use them just fine! Good luck! They are definitely inexpensive to make, just shop around.

I have 2 of these types of waterers for chickens. I used them on adults, they took to them fairly quickly and all went well.

My only issue with it was that when recycling the 2 liter bottle, they are now a much thinner plastic than before and it creates an issue with using the nipple system. As the water level decreases in the bottle the bottle starts to crush inwards and over time the bottle develops cracks. I have tried several different brands of soft drink bottles and the same has happened on each type.

The design of the system works great, no wet bedding, and plenty of water for a couple of birds(you will have to refill a couple times a day in the warmer months).

If I were to use this type of system again I would try to find something larger, dog size of a rigid plastic.

I would just like a waterer that does not drip and leak all over my coop.. I have the 3 gallon plastic ones (they were cheaper) and I hang them, but they drip all the time making the chips wet and smelly.. Do the metal ones work better?? I am not having a problem with shaving in them all the time, just dripping and leaking.. OK. my 5 week old pullets doesnt drip (1 gallon) but I can't hang it so its always full of chips.. I will try the grebil style also, I have one laying around here..

We're currently trying to transition our three hens (5 weeks) to a rabbit/gerbil waterer. The first few days they didn't seem to drink much. Some, but not as much as they were with a regular waterer (that kept getting messy...).

We are on day 3 and they are taking in much more. They definitely know how to use it and have from the beginning. They just have to work harder for it and I'm not sure they were into that.

If they make the transition, we'll be SO stoked. No more messy waterers...We'll see.

Our next step, if this doesn't work, will be to try those nipples from FarmTek mentioned in a previous post. They are just expensive to ship (unless there's someone out there who can find them cheaper). You CAN get them on eBay too. They are a lil' different from the Farm Tek but seem to be basically the same thing. Again, however, they are in China and are about the same as the ones from FarmTek after the shipping...Seems to me to be "half-dozen one way, 6 the other.
