Another word of warning...and Help please!

Oh! I didn't see this thread yesterday. Poor little guy and poor you! You are NOT a bad Mom! Don't think like that. These things happen. The positive is you have shared with us and now we know better too! I hope he and you are better today.

Let us know.

Hi guys..and i cant say thanks enough for the help/advice!..He did eat some wet mash i made him...he kept shaking his head..(like it hurt, or was trying to get it down)..but, he did eat some so..thats a good thing!...
fl.gif
...i hope he will be okay?...what about infection?..or him loosing the tongue?...i was able to see better today..i used a toothpick, (not the pointy ends..but the smooth middle), to open his little beak, and it is like cut almost half way through, and little chunks missing..(i think thats where the other one was pecking his tongue!...
sickbyc.gif
..)..so now, i guess all i can do is keep a close eye on him...and give him soft foods...my concern now is infection...thanks again for the help, Wendy

Just give him easy stuff to eat - soft mash, fresh water, and keep an eye on him. Buttons are so small, I don't know that anyone really knows what a safe dose of anything would be for them. I hope he heals quickly.

Red,
Sorry you have had so many problems with these buttons. I feel sort
of bad for ever giving them to you. On the other hand quail are tough.
They aren't like chickens. We lose more than that.

Last night I had to pull one out of a turkey's mouth. The turkey thought
it was a mouse and snagged it. He was mad at me when I pryed his
mouth open to get the quail out.

Stuff happens and everything is a new learning experience. It sounds
like you are doing very well with those little buttons.

If you don't wanna keep them let me know. My biggest Tom Turkey
would love to eat it.

If he loses part of his tongue, I think he could still live a normal life without much problem. He should still be able to eat, drink and groom himself.

I hope the little guy feels better soon.

Hi red,

Sorry to hear about ur button. I had the same sort of thing happen with one of my bantams. I had a tarp hanging over thier outside brooder for shade and one end got a little worn and seperated into strings. Well I guess one of my bantam chicks thought it was a yummy treat b/c she swallowed a good bit of the string and ended up cutting her tongue pretty bad trying to get away from the string that was still attached to the tarp..

I had to cut the string to free her.

I felt horrible. But she did fine. Her tongue healed in just a cpl days and she has not had any problems since.

Hope ur lil guy does well.

Hey Red we just lost a few more Coturnix. It appears our big brooder
in the barn is not big enough. at least 6 of our young quail flew out the
top, right into the waiting mouths of our meat birds and turkeys. We found
one (dead) and 5 more are missing. We lost all but 2 of our goldens.
