We had a broody hen who stopped sitting on a batch of eggs after one hatched out. There was another chick who got its beak out of the egg, but the egg wasn't zipped all the way around the egg. We got the other eggs into an incubator, then noticed there were a bunch of ants in the shell of the half- hatched chick. We had to remove part of the shell, but not the membrane to get the ants out. Now the chick still has the membrane, but hasn't managed to make any more progress in hatching from the rest of the membrane or shell. We have it wrapped in a wet towel to keep the membrane moist. Should we help it to zip the rest of the way around the shell or will it be ok with half of the wide end of the egg opened?
