The shed in which I plan on making my coop is host to the ants nest that plagues my house. Is there a safe (to my chickens) way to remove the ants? Like, if I put ant poison in the nest of ants it's that ok?

I won't be putting my chickens in there until the ants are gone.

If they are fire ants you can poison them, also stepping on their nest a few times a week can also give the ants the idea that, that area is not a good place for a nest and they will move.

There not fire ants. They're just the normal annoying ants. Their nest is in the roof of the shed I think.

I just found some run of the mill small black ants inside the coop. I don't know if my chickies will eat them or should I try something to get rid of them. I'm new to this and could really use the advice. Thanks!

Did you ever find an answer to this? I just noticed tiny black ants in my coop as well and I'm not sure what I should do!

I just posted this in a fire ant thread.... Try baking soda and sugar. sprinkle it on the piles the ants go to get the sugar and get some soda too and then think of the grade school volcano thing. The soda reacts with the acids in the ant and the ants die. Then if your chickens are so inclined they will eat the carnage(but really you dont see anything)

Edit: heres a link for info http://plantedspace.com/howto/maintain/item/37-organic-ant-control-with-baking-soda
