Hello everyone,

I'm new to chicken keeping... actually I haven't yet even had the opportunity to hold a chicken! I've been reading as much as I can (although perhaps not retaining so much) and lurking on this site for a while.

I have a large 100x45ft backyard right in the city (in Ontario, Canada). I'm in the middle of building my coop at the back of the property (so thankful for the coop section on this site!).

I've been delaying buying chickens for months as I've felt unprepared but I finally took the plunge (learn by doing??). I have six little ones coming home tomorrow - 3 silkies (white, black and brown) and 3 Orpingtons (black and lavender). I also would like some plymouth barred rocks but since I don't know how many males and females I'll end up with I'm going to wait until later. So I have a large rubbermaid tub ready with bedding, food, water and heat lamp (this thing admittedly scares me).

Feeling pretty anxious tonight! I hope I've made the right decision and won't regret this endeavor. I've been thinking of a backyard coop for several years now so I don't take these things lightly. I'm just so darn busy with work and school... but they seem fairly easy to care for...I hope!

Anyway, I look forward to participating in this community.

Thank you for the welcoming!

The new babies are doing well I think. Can't believe how clumsy they are, it's almost surprising they live past the first day! haha I believe I've made the brooder as safe as possible.
