I am totally new to this . I now have successfully hatched out a 16 day old peachick. Need advice asap. At the moment he/she is loving mealworm dry soaked or alive. Grass in the coop during the sunny day and game starter. Not drinking water that much though??I have a duckling that has just pipped as well.

I feed the Purina medicated start & grow with chick grit sprinkled on it and sometimes scrambled eggs. to get my chicks to drink more i put colored rocks in the water so they peck at it and remember to drink. Also try dipping his beak in water a few times a day, maybe the electrolyte water (they seemed to like the flavor & go back for it) I was told that peachicks don't do well alone & need a buddy to remind them to eat & drink.. do you have anyone else to put with him? If not I've seen people add a hanging feather duster, mirrors and small stuffed animal so they think they have a buddy.

Hang a water bottle put a flat tray of the starter feed down and your mom so scratch at the food if she dont come to see then put the chick in the tray and sratch at the feed, your mom you have to teach cept the water bottle they learn easy but put a shallow tray of water out as well..the bird will be very tame and petable congratuations but they need constant care and monitor their poop and learn in advance what bad poop looks like from coccidiousis and blackhead both can kill your bird in 3 days, nematodes and earthworms are bad juju for the dieaseases

Stay away from feeding sunflower seeds nor corn only once in awhile as a treat but a better treat is hot dog buns, feed plenty of wild bird feed and a good turkey crumble that has oyster shell ground into it and then set out crushed oyster shell as well they need xtra calcium or they grow weak bones prone to breakage, if you dont feed the grains then they dont need any grit but if you give any grains then add grit however the problem with too much grains is that they are a carb which is sugars and they will peck out and eat their favorites and not eat the right stuff and grow weak bones and be prone to infections and deseases, give plenty of greens, cut clover is great n grasses, I have 4 and in the winter they get collard greens and musk melons in summers, if u freeze them they goto mush when thawed and they love it and will eat even the rinds, the dirt is your enemy especialy after rains and worms come out, dont let them eat any worms or expect problems and maybe worse

Thanks for all your replies. I do have a feather duster and a mirror which helps. He loves to fall asleep on my chest whilst I watch TV. He will be joining some other peacocks once he is bigger. I will have some chick buddies soon. He has already met two Silkie chicks. They seem to get on ok.

Mirrors can make your male become aggressive when mature and if so will attack his own image non stop until he kills himself from exhaustion from trying to kill the other bird. Not all do but on the add chance yours does become a psycho nut you wont be able to free range him at all or he will attack your brand new shinny blue F 150 with chrome trim all the way around and scratch the shinny off with his bloody spur less busted up stump from trying to kill your truck. Or any other vehicle he can see himself in he will also attack like your girlfriends right front quarter panel of her nice new blue shinny Jeep or the chrome bumper on some random fly fishermens new Toyota,.., how do you explain that one to your insurance, lol. but honestly a peacock did this !

lol. so I've been told. I was suggesting it for a young chick though so it doesn't get lonely.

Seriously, it is sounding like you speak from experience! I am sorry... Meanwhile I will be trying to find a tune, because this is sounding like a country hit song, along the lines of "Grandma got run over by a reindeer"!... I'll call it "All because of that dang peacock Blue" or maybe just "I got the dang peacock blues"...

Yes, it goes along the lines of a male peacock moving in one day and taking over with the ominous mistake of getting him a harem for company hoping maybe he wouldnt attack vehicles anymore or at least the girl friends Jeep. I let him out for the first time this year and he ran to the Jeep and attacked it, lol...she didnt think so either ! lol,lol feel free to write the song I am sure I can add more bits here and there.

Hey, at least you still have the girlfriend... (and the peacock!)... And hopefully, good auto insurance with liability... I had peacocks for awhile, mine were sweet birds, but they didn't free range because there were other peacocks in the area and I was afraid they would leave... One day, my dog broke them out of the pen and they did leave...
