We have Muscovies. One of them started laying on February 24th. She laid 1 egg a day, we took the first 10 eggs or so as it was her first time ever laying and we wanted to try them.. Then we let her keep a bunch..
She has 7 that she has been sitting on since middle of March. How long is their incubation period usually? My hubby said it was about 32 days from when she starts laying on them, is that correct?
We tried to candle the eggs today, but, dont have a flashlight bright enough (any tips on what to buy??)
As I said, this is her first time ever laying, she has been sitting on them non stop, she only leaves them to eat.. and we're just wondering if there is still any chance of hatching, or if the time has pretty much past..
If they never hatch should we just take them from her at some point? Or wait for her to abandon them?
If these do not make it, will she lay on the next batch she makes?? I know that wont be for a bit, but, just been wondering if she will instinctively try again..
Our other 2 females havent begun to lay yet and we're anxiously awaiting their laying (one of them has been having Lots of sex with one of the males---so hoping hers are fertile!)
Any tips/ideas are very welcome! I did read the one sticky I found about candling eggs.. didnt find any info about duck hatching times (maybe I was looking in the wrong place?).
