Curious if we set up the chicks with a dish type system and then introduce nipples is there a transition period we need both or have people seen the chicks pick up new style easily?

when you make the transition do it totally. All the birds will catch on, none will suffer from thirst for a harmful amount of time.
Birds definetly prefer to drink from a pool of water at foot level. That is natural for them. So if you provide both they will not drink so much from the nipple.
Training. The most extreme thing you need to do is brush the nipple so that a droplet holds on the end for a moment so at least one bird sees and pecks at it. All the other birds will soon catch on. I do not know how one makes nipples drip unless you jam something in them to maintain an open waterway.

Chicks and adults have required no training from me. They natural peck at things and the nipples get their attention quite fast. One figures it out and they all join it. If it is the only water source they will use it as soon as they find it.

I agree that this is the way to go, no need to over think the whole idea, they will get the thirsty and find it quick.

yeah, they'll figure it out quick... recently, my girls learned out to drink out of the water hose while i'm using it... LOL... they just dive right in... HAHAHHHA... i feel like a jerk, but they seem to enjoy it... i guess their waterer is way too far from them sometimes...
