I don't want to build our nesting boxes. I've seen some nice nesting box ideas here-plastic containers, milk crates, small wooden boxes. What are some other very inexpensive ideas I can use?

I did the milk crates. But I put a piece of wood the length of all the boxes and skipped every other one. So I got 5 boxes on each level but only used 2 milk crates. Mine chicks are to small yet but it will work just fine.

i built mine...it was fun and i have no carpentry skills whatsoever...took me less than a couple of hours to make em and mount em on the back of the coop...i just followed some examples off here.

Where does one get milk cartons from anyway?

I salvaged some drawers from a desk someone was throwing away. They are a tad small, but maybe not too much. Perfect shape, and deep. Maybe my banties will like them if they turn out too big (edit: too SMALL) for the heavies. I just love the charm of the old wood ...

Not that I'll be needing nest boxes for a WHILE yet ...

I thought about using kitty litter boxes, but they're SO expensive! Instead I bought a few storage boxes from Freddy's that were on sale for a few dollars.

In one of our eras of chickens, the hens kept flying up to our second story porch and laying the eggs right out in the open. So we just grabbed some cardboard boxes, squashed the flaps down inside, and threw in a handful of hay. Simple, inexpensive (especially since you can get them for free if you go to most grocery stores late in the evening), and replaceable when they get dirty.
